About the Presenters
KAREN L. ERICKSON has been a Professional Teaching Artist for more than 20 years. As Executive Director of Creative Directions, she trains artists and teachers in drama education, curriculum planning, arts integration, and assessment development nationally and internationally. Ms. Erickson continues her work as a playwright and stage director in addition to authoring seven drama education books used in schools throughout the country. Her most recent publication, The Arts: Keystones to Learning was published in 2005 and documented 26 arts integrated programs in the Chicago Public Schools. She served as the Artistic Director of Trinity Square Ensemble Theater in Chicago for eight years in addition to several years working at the Goodman Theater where she was an assistant to Tennessee Williams during his two-year residency. Ms. Erickson has written more than 15 plays for youth and adults produced by theater companies across the United States. She works with the Kennedy Center's professional development programs including Changing Education Through the Arts (C.E.T.A.). Ms. Erickson is a certified teacher in English, speech communications, and theater education for grades K-12. She co-wrote the Illinois Arts Goals, Standards, Performance Descriptors and Chicago Drama Benchmarks in addition to a state book on Fine Arts Integration.

TERRY BOYARSKY, pianist, is a movement specialist, singer and ethnomusicologist who believes that every person is musical. Her search for musical collaboration has led her into chamber music, choral singing, folk dance, coaching, accompanying dance and creating ceremony. Terry has collaborated with singers and dancers across the United States, Canada, France, Switzerland, and Venezuela.
Terry holds a BA in experimental psychology from Reed College, a BM in Eurhythmics from Cleveland Institute of Music, and an MA in Ethnomusicology from Kent State University. Her piano teachers include Fred Rothchild, Rebecca Penneys, Jeaneane Dowis, James Tannenbaum, and coaching with Vitya Vronsky Babin. She has further training from the Dalcroze School in New York City, two levels of Orff Schulwerk, and was one of sixteen Ohio artists selected to participate in the Kennedy Center for the Arts Seminars “Artists as Educators” from 2004 - 2007. She has been listed in “Who’s Who” since 2000. Terry has taught and created events for institutions such as the Dalcroze Society of America, American Orff-Schulwerk Society, Society for Ethnomusicology, the Cleveland Institute of Music, University of Hawaii, Rowe Center in Massachusetts, Kasetsat University in Bangkok, Thailand, Los Hipocampitos in Carrizal, Venezuela, Bard College Conservatory of Music, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Terry was a Teaching Artist for almost two decades with the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning. She was in the first group of artists selected for the Kennedy Center’s Ohio State-Based Collaborative Initiative, and a Teaching Artist for Ohio Arts Council. She presents professional development workshops on arts integration and Dalcroze Eurhythmics nationally. She has published articles in the Orff Echo, the American Dalcroze Journal, Seminars in Neurology, and Teaching Artist Journal. She has taught children, disadvantaged youth, amateur adults, the learning disabled, educators, actors, professional musicians and conservatory students around the world. She sings with the Cleveland Orchestra Blossom Festival Chorus and Choral Arts Cleveland. |
SANDRA PHAUP is the writing teacher with the da Vinci Project at Barcroft Elementary School, and Coordinator of Fine Arts for the Gifted, Arlington Public Schools, Virginia. She has taught English and/or art for more than 20 years at the elementary, high school, and college levels in the United States and England. Writing and art are both avocation and vocation for her. She has exhibited artwork and presented topics at national and state conferences related to student learning in writing, economics, and visual and performing arts.
