Join the band and grab a drum! Drum circles bring us together as a community. Participants will be led in rhythm activities where they get to play grooves as a group. This is a time of fun, laughter, and relaxation. Feel free to Jam and then Print or Print and then Jam.

During this fun social gathering, participants will get to create unique and original monoprints using water-soluble materials. Participants will also get to explore the world of Styrofoam plate printmaking while networking with like-minded individuals. Feel free to Print and then Jam or Jam and then Print.

SMARTS, Students Motivated by the Arts is located in the Ohio One Building on the First Floor. The entrance is on East Boardman Street. The closest parking is USA Parking Deck at Eastern Gateway Community College, 10 North Champion Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44503. The cost is $4.50 per day. You can access the lot from either Champion Street or Walnut Street. |

DAY 1 - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 2019
LAYING A FOUNDATION: DEFINING ARTS INTEGRATION (All Grade Levels) with Karen Erickson
Many of the Kennedy Center’s professional development offerings are based on a philosophy and practice of teaching called arts integration. So what is arts integration? This session unpacks the Kennedy Center’s definition and gives you the opportunity to uncover the characteristics of quality integration. In addition, the session includes your participation in an arts-integrated lesson and examines how arts-integrated instruction aligns with current learning principles and best practice.

Join the band and grab a drum! Drum circles bring us together as a community. Participants will be led in rhythm activities where they get to play grooves as a group. This is a time of fun, laughter, and relaxation. Feel free to Jam and then Print or Print and then Jam.

THE DRAMA OF SCIENCE (Grades 1-6) with Karen Erickson
Drama & Science
In this workshop, participants explore a step-by-step process of integrating science concepts and drama strategies in the classroom. Teachers learn how to transform science lessons into active, student-centered explorations of earth science, mechanical science, and biology through drama strategies such as expressive movement and enacted story. Teachers also learn about activities that develop teamwork and creative problem solving skills in students. Participants examine techniques for classroom management and building group dynamics while experiencing several types of integration design.
STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN! AN EXPLORATION OF MAPS USING MUSIC AND MOVEMENT (Grades 2-6) with Terry Boyarsky
Music with Movement & Social Studies
The purpose of the workshop is to use elements of song, rhythm and movement to explore and enhance map-reading skills.
USING VISUAL ART TO ENCOURAGE THINKING AND WRITING (Grades K-5) with Sandra Phaup
Visual Art & Language Arts & Social Studies
Visual images, like language, carry meaning, and the ability to read images is a useful skill in an increasingly visual world. In this workshop, teachers examine ways to develop student thinking and writing skills using a four-part art criticism process and/or a guided pre-writing approach. Participants learn ways to encourage thinking and motivate student writing using careful observation of a visual artwork as the starting point. Sharing ideas and ways to connect artwork to curriculum themes is also part of the workshop.

Drama & Language Arts
In this workshop, teachers discover how to build vocabulary skills, improve reading comprehension, and expand writing techniques through drama integration. Participants explore ways to transform language arts lessons into active, student-centered explorations of story elements, word choice, fluency, comprehension, writing, and characterization through drama strategies such as expressive movement, ensemble, story dramatization, and character development. Participants learn about activities that develop teamwork and creative problem solving skills in students through activities that help improve grammar, predicting, inferring skills, and adding details to writing assignments.
DIVIDING TIME/ DIVIDING SPACE - USING MUSIC & MOVEMENT TO STUDY INCREMENT, RATIO & PROPORTION (Grades 2-6) with Terry Boyarsky
Music with Movement & Math
Learning through music and rhythmic movement draws on students’ kinesthetic intelligence, deepens understanding and retention. Joyful, energetic, collaborative activities are powerful motivators for learning. The purpose of this participatory workshop is to introduce ways of using music and movement to deepen students’ understanding of increment, ratio and proportion.

TEACHER COLLABORATION: IDEAS AND INNOVATIONS
This will be a time for break-out sessions for teachers to collaborate and share ideas. Teachers can split into teams of their own choosing based on age, subject, school, etc to plan and learn about what others are teaching and preparing to teach in their current positions.
